Leadership of the HEART
Follow-Up Experience
Welcome to the Leadership of
the HEART Seminar follow-up experience.
Over the next four weeks you will have the opportunity
to review and wrestle into your life the principles
taught in the seminar. We know that becoming more authentic
in life and leadership is both a great challenge and
responsibility. The seminar was a wonderful step in
that direction. But now, you must move from understanding
a few principles to living out what authentic leadership
is all about.
During the next four weeks I will guide
you back through the content of the seminar syllabus. Hopefully,
you still have your syllabus with the notes you took during
the seminar. If you can’t find your syllabus because
you’ve moved, the dog ate it or you used it as a placemat
for dinner one night, just click and download
the Leadership of the HEART syllabus now.
This is how the follow-up experience
will play out:
First – each day you will come to the website
and listen to the mp3 audio track of the day.
You will hear me speaking, not U2 or Keith Urban singing.
Too bad, huh? I was tempted to begin each track with my
classic yodeling routine, but wiser heads prevailed. If
you like, you can download all of these tracks at once
and keep them in a folder on your computer or put them
on an mp3 player (like an iPod). But only listen to
one track per day. My hope is that you do this first
thing in the morning because I want you to be thinking
about the principle or issue raised throughout your day.
The track of the day will be 3 to 5 minutes in
length and there are 20 tracks. This means that
if you listen to one track a day during a typical
business week the follow-up experience will last four
weeks. This also allows you to have the weekends off.
That’s right – free time to relax, party,
have fun and cut loose a little. If you occasionally miss
a day and get behind, no problem! Just work through the tracks until
you complete the experience at your pace.
Second – let me make a few
suggestions that will maximize your experience as you listen
to the track of the day.
• Buy a journal or spiral notebook so
you can keep track of insights or thoughts you have throughout
the experience. I use a Sketchbook made by Bienfang for
my journal. It has a vertical format which allows me to
journal in two columns on each page (http://www.misterart.com/store/view/001/group_id/608/Bienfang-Note-Sketch-Book.htm).
Also, choose a specific place to keep your notebook and
DAILY CARDS (I’ll explain those in a moment.)
• Before you listen to each audio track - pray. Remember,
this follow-up experience is about allowing God access
to your heart and mind. So, ask the Lord (who is for
you, loves you and believes in you) to
expose what is next in your leadership journey.
• Find a leadership ‘work-out’ partner. In
other words…do this process with a friend. Yes,
a friend. You know, someone who will put up with you and
sees the good in you. It would be so cool if you could
find someone who went through the seminar and would be
willing to share the experience. If you do this, it will
multiply the impact of the experience. It will give you
someone to discuss the daily questions that are assigned.
If you find a ‘work-out’ partner but they
haven’t attended the seminar they can listen to
the seminar on CD before you start. Click
here to order the Leadership of the HEART seminar on CD.
• Download, print and cut out the DAILY
CARDS. There are two documents that each have five
cards. You will need to print these out. Each page has
five cards on it that when folded become 3x5 inches. You
will need to cut these out, fold them, and carry with
you throughout your day. Confused? Download and print
them – it will make sense. If you can, print the
cards on a high quality paper or even a light card stock.
(Note: As you look at each page and see the five 3x5
cut-outs, you’ll notice that they are numbered Day
#1 thru Day #20. Cut them out and put them in order. Ignore
all the cards except for the card of the day. You’ll
be tempted to read all the cards…don’t do
that. Waiting will make them a daily surprise and keep
you focused on the day’s lesson. The cards correspond
with whichever track of the day you are listening to. These
are important because after you listen to the daily track,
I will give you a short assignment to write on the back
of the card. You will carry that card with you all day
and discuss it with your ‘work-out’ partner.
Don’t lose these cards. Keep a file of them somewhere
safe.)
Third – each day you will
be expected to do a little work. Don’t short cut these
simple assignments! Everyday I will take you back to a section
of the Leadership of the HEART syllabus to review
a key concept or principle of authentic leadership. These
will be highlighted on your DAILY CARDS. Take each
day seriously. It’s hard work to change the way we
approach life and leadership.
If you have your Leadership of the
HEART syllabus, a notebook, a pen, all the DAILY
CARDS cut out, your daily audio track and hopefully a ‘work-out’ partner -
you are ready to begin.
So, let’s get after it. Let’s
become the people and leaders God hopes for us to be. Know
that I’m praying for you as you journey through the Leadership
of the HEART follow-up experience.
